We believe in eternal progression. We should continually grow spiritually throughout our lives. The gospel challenges us to endure to the end.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Every blessing I have in my life, everything I hold dear and precious in my heart, I can trace to my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to my love of the Lord, to my testimony of his divine gospel, and to the responses I have made to the opportunities for service.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1991 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1991%20Oct%200102%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">Jesus the Christ<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Who is this Jesus whom we worship? Above all people on earth, we Latter-day Saints should appreciate the vital significance of Jesus of Nazareth\u2014his role in the plan of salvation, his virgin birth, his immaculate life, his powerful teachings, his selfless death, his glorious resurrection, his guidance of his Church.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Jesus took upon himself the sins of all of us in Gethsemane and on the cross. He died that we might live. Who among us has not experienced the pain of sin? Who does not desperately need the balm of divine forgiveness to heal a wounded soul?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1989 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1989%20Oct%200302%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">Chastity: The Source of True Manhood<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;\u201cThou shalt not commit adultery,\u201d Jehovah commanded, \u201cand he that committeth adultery, and repenteth not, shall be cast out.\u201d (D&amp;C 42:24.) My beloved young brethren, despite what the world would have us believe, God has never changed that law.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;My beloved Aaronic Priesthood brethren, with all you are learning as you progress toward virile manhood, I pray that you will get understanding of the vital truth that chastity is the ultimate and perfect standard underlying all spiritual progression.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Don\u2019t be too anxious to grow up. Bask in the pleasure of anticipating what it will be like to be an adult. Remember, you are only young once, and you are going to be old for a long time.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Brethren, set limits to your actions\u2014bounds you will not pass\u2014far from the line which separates good from evil. Be prepared for the experiences that lie ahead. Plan in advance how you will face temptations\u2014weigh the consequences, now and forever. Be sure you understand the situation confronting you.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Take control of your life. It is your body\u2014the clothing of your spirit\u2014you are dealing with. Don\u2019t become a slave to your appetites or passions. Be mature enough to have the spirit control your body. Self-control is vital when you are resisting what you know is wrong, especially when a friend insists. This self-control comes with practice, so it\u2019s important to build your inner strength. Constantly remind yourself that you are a son of God with great things to do.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Some of us are held back in our development by mistakes we have made, sins we have committed, regrets that we let weigh on our consciences until they burden us down to the breaking point.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Forget the past\u2014except to use it to build a better life.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1987 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1987%20Oct%200403%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">Called to Serve<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;God\u2019s truth can only be known through the Spirit of the Lord.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;A missionary must be in tune with that Holy Spirit. He must recognize its guidance and inspiration. His life must be pure so he can count on that Spirit in all that he does.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1985 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1985%20Oct%200104%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">As I Have Loved You<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Reaching out to others is not an easy thing to do, particularly when you are young. To take the hand of another at the risk of your own popularity takes a mature, Christlike love.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It was not until I was called on a mission that I discovered the real key to happiness. To my surprise, despite the discouragement, the disappointments, and the plain hard work associated with my missionary labors, I was happy. It was then I learned that happiness is really a by-product of service.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;A life can never be happy that is focused inward. So if you are miserable now, forget your troubles. March right out your door, and find someone who needs you.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1982 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1982%20Oct%200301%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">Revitalizing Aaronic Priesthood Quorums<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Every priesthood holder has the sacred privilege of belonging to a quorum and has the right to activity in that quorum. We have no right to deny him that honor. Yet we do just that when we do not reach out to involve him.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;As the president of the Aaronic Priesthood, the bishop has the responsibility to give his personal attention to each bearer of the Aaronic Priesthood. No young man in the ward should ever feel that he walks alone, that he is not wanted or needed. He should always know that his bishop is his fellow servant, approachable, empathetic, a confidant, his champion.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Please give our young men the opportunity to stretch their souls in service. Too often we only entertain, leaving our young men in the role of spectators. They will grow as they are involved, and they will develop love for their fellowmen, at the same time forgetting their own weaknesses and frailties as they serve. The sooner our young men have experiences in meaningful service, the sooner they will understand their priesthood responsibilities and their own capacity to truly be their brother\u2019s keeper, and the sooner they will discover the key to lasting happiness. In service every quorum member will know that he is needed. Even the most inactive will respond to an invitation to bless someone\u2019s life.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>October 1980 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1980%20Oct%200303%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">To the Young Men of the Church<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Doesn\u2019t that make you feel kind of special to know how much God is counting on you? The future of his Church is in your hands. You are the ones that God has chosen to be his leaders, reserved to come to this earth when you could influence your fellowmen by the power of your lives and by sharing the principles of the gospel. How well are you doing, young men?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Those special things you have to do include being rulers of the nations, lawmakers, business and professional men, teachers, tradesmen, tillers of the soil, and so on. But even more, the special things you have to do involve the establishment of the kingdom of Zion and the building of it. That, my young brethren, requires much more than the casual approach many of us take to preparation for life. It requires the establishment of goals\u2014far-reaching goals that stretch into eternity, goals that require courage and determination to achieve.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>April 1978 General Conference\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/davidson-law.net\/CR\/1978%20Apr%200506%20BackmanRL%2070.pdf\">Everything Dear<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I\u2019ve enjoyed such rich experiences as I\u2019ve grown up and matured. As each one has come along, I\u2019ve questioned, \u201cWhy me? Why has the Lord given me such rich opportunities to grow and to develop? Why has he provided such opportunities to give service?\u201d I thank him from the bottom of my heart for the richness of my life, the happiness which I\u2019ve enjoyed.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;President Benson, in our seminar last Friday, mentioned the fact that the highest honor we could have is to be members of God\u2019s church, which I am; to know that Christ is our Savior, our personal Savior, which I testify to you I know; to hold his holy priesthood, which I do; and to be a part of an eternal family unit, which I am. I\u2019m honored above all men. I\u2019m blessed above all men.
